Ontario’s Big Goose.
It’s inevitable! When you hear someone say they are from the small Northern Ontario community of Wawa, the immediate response is, “That’s the town with the Big Goose.”
You have to wonder if Al Turcott, the man behind the twenty-eight-foot-high steel bird had any idea of the success of this tourist magnet. Perched high over the Magpie River Valley near the town’s entrance, the beloved Wawa Goose greets travellers from far and wide as they make their way along the winding Trans-Canada Highway. Every year since 1960, thousands of tourists stop to have their photo taken with “Wawa”. This iconic roadside attraction has even been captured in musical lyrics (Stompin’ Tom Connors’s “Little Wawa”) and a Hollywood movie (Snowcake).
Any traveller driving along the east shore of Lake Superior will be drawn to stop in Wawa and have their picture taken with the Wawa Goose. It’s inevitable!

La grande oie de l’Ontario.
Elle est inévitable ! Lorsque vous entendez quelqu’un dire qu’ils viennent de la petite communauté de Wawa au nord de l’Ontario, la réaction immédiate est : « C’est la ville avec la grande oie ».
Il faut se demander si Al Turcott, l’homme derrière l’oiseau d’acier d’une hauteur de 28 pieds avait une idée du succès de cet aimant touristique. Perché bien au-dessus de la vallée de la rivière Magpie près de l’entrée de la ville, l’oie Wawa bien-aimée salue les voyageurs de loin qui arrivent le long de la sinueuse route transcanadienne. Chaque année depuis 1960, des milliers de touristes s’arrêtent pour prendre leur photo avec Wawa. Cette attraction emblématique au bord de la route a même été capturée dans des paroles musicales (« Little Wawa » de Stompin’ Tom Connors) et dans un film hollywoodien (« Snowcake »).
Tous les voyageurs qui conduisent le long de la rive est du lac Supérieur seront attirés et s’arrêteront à Wawa pour prendre une photo avec l’Oie de Wawa. C’est inévitable !
