The Bear and the Fish
Thunder Bay, ON — gouache on cardboard / gouache sur carton — 1964
For Norval Morrisseau, the bear, the fish, and the sun represent a sacred cycle. These forces and creatures cannot be conceived independently but are an ecological system, portrayed here as the fish inside the bear, becoming the bear. This system of energy is ancient but it also represents our most advanced thinking on sustainability.
Norval Morrisseau, CM was a renowned self-taught artist of Anishinaabe heritage and the originator of the Woodlands School. He helped form the Professional National Indian Artists Incorporation in 1973. He grew up on the Bingwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek reserve and died in Toronto in 2007.
