Joseph Hartman is a photographer who lives and works in Hamilton and whose work can be found in several significant Canadian collections.
I feel very lucky to have grown up in rural Ontario, where I spent my summers on the shores of Georgian Bay. I now return to these places from my childhood to photograph them. As well, being the son of an artist, I have many great memories of his studio. That drew me to other artists’ studios, and four years ago I began to photograph studios in southern Ontario, and eventually across Canada.
Kim Dorland’s Toronto studio was the first I photographed for this project. It was a great place to start; his studio was in a frenetic state as he prepared for an upcoming show in New York. There was paint everywhere and it was impossible not to get any on me as I navigated my way around his studio between wet paintings. I found this moment amidst the chaos.

Je m’estime très chanceux d’avoir grandi dans une région rurale de l’Ontario, où je passais mes étés sur les rives de la baie Georgienne. Je retourne maintenant à ces lieux de mon enfance pour les photographier. De plus, étant le fils d’un artiste, j’ai beaucoup de magnifiques souvenirs du studio de mon père et c’est ce qui m’a attiré vers les studios d’autres artistes. Il y a quatre ans, j’ai commencé à photographier les studios du sud de l’Ontario et, en définitive, de partout au Canada.
Le studio de Toronto de Kim Dorland a était le premier studio que j’ai photographié pour ce projet. C’était un endroit fantastique où débuter puisque son studio était dans un état frénétique, car Kim se préparait pour une prochaine exposition à New York. Il y avait de la peinture partout et il était impossible de ne pas en avoir sur moi pendant que je me frayais un chemin autour du studio de Kim, entre des tableaux humides. J’ai trouvé ce moment parmi le chaos.
