My husband, daughter, and I embraced Ontario’s slogan “Yours To Discover” by driving along the Great Lakes’ shorelines and exploring communities, both big and small. A child’s tombstone in the remote town of Gogama, a conversation with a blind hiker on Flowerpot Island, and kimchi found in Korean restaurants dotted all over the province were among the things that left me wanting to write about what I saw and experienced. As an ESL student struggling to adapt to a new country, I realized early on the beauty of the English language and the opportunities that learning it would open for me. Yet, it would take decades before I found the courage to write my stories. In “discovering” Ontario’s many treasures, I found the inspiration to share them. Forty-two years ago my parents chose Canada — chose Ontario as our new home. We didn’t know then how wisely they had chosen, and how grateful I’d be one day.

Mon époux, ma fille et moi-même avons adopté la devise de l’Ontario « Tant à découvrir », en conduisant le long des rives des Grands Lacs et en explorant les collectivités, grandes et petites. À titre d’étudiante de l’anglais, langue seconde, s’efforçant de s’adapter à un nouveau pays, j’ai réalisé rapidement la beauté de la langue anglaise et les possibilités que son apprentissage m’ouvrirait. Pourtant, des décennies se sont écoulées avant que je trouve le courage d’écrire mes histoires. En « découvrant » les nombreux trésors de l’Ontario, j’ai trouvé l’inspiration pour les partager. Il y a 42 ans, mes parents ont élu domicile au Canada — choisissant l’Ontario comme notre nouvelle demeure. Nous ne savions pas alors à quel point leur décision était sage, et dans quelle mesure je leur serais reconnaissante aujourd’hui.
